About the Cause

The Michael L. Chandler Philanthropic Fund was opened with the Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation to support cancer care and/or cancer research at Mills-Peninsula and the Dorothy E. Schneider Cancer Center.

Mike received treatment & care at Mills-Peninsula during September 2003 - May 2004 while he courageously fought against stomach cancer. The extent of care we received both at Peninsula Hospital and the Dorothy E. Schneider Cancer Center was remarkable. It was Mike's wish that we continue our efforts to raise awareness & funds towards cancer care, and in particular stomach cancer.

We need your continued help in order to support the funding of a dietician at The Cancer Center of Mills Peninsula Hospital. It costs over $21,000 annually to staff a nutritional counselor.

The Cancer Center staff treat numerous patients with gastrointestinal cancers similar to Mike's. These patients have a challenging time in maintaining adequate nutrition as we also experienced. By aggressively intervening early in treatment, the patient will hopefully be able to maintain their weight and quality of life. The cancer patients would benefit from consultation with a dietitian during the course of their 6 to 8 weeks of treatment. The patients will have weekly access to Sarah Ellis -- the dietitian who will provide nutritional assessment, counseling, and medical nutritional therapy support. She will communicate interventions to the physician and other interdisciplinary team members. Sarah will also develop and maintain educational resources for the cancer patients.
